Big and Tall Leather Furniture: Built for Comfort

Big and tall leather furniture in a living room — the Sundance by Leather Creations

Comfort at Any Size

Big and tall leather furniture, built to fit you

By the Leather Creations Design Team · American-made since 1994

Big and tall leather furniture exists for a simple reason: most sofas are built to an average, and a larger or taller frame is not average. If you have ever sat down and felt your knees rise above your hips, your back unsupported above the cushion, or the whole piece flex when you settle in, you already know the problem. A seat that fits is the difference between perching on your furniture and actually relaxing into it. The good news is that you don’t have to design a sofa from scratch to get there: we carry a wide range of styles already suited to bigger and taller frames, and we make a few practical adjustments — taller legs, a firmer seat — that dial in the fit. Here is exactly what makes furniture big-and-tall, who it is for, and how to find the piece that fits you.

It comes down to fit

What actually makes furniture big-and-tall

“Big and tall” is not one number — it is several working together. A standard sofa sits around 19 to 20 inches off the floor with a seat depth near 21 inches and a back about 32 to 34 inches high. For a larger or taller person those proportions fall short in predictable ways: the seat is too low, so your knees rise and your back rounds; the seat is too shallow, so there is nowhere to rest your full thigh; and the back is too short to support your shoulders. The practical fix isn’t to engineer a one-off sofa — it’s to start with a style whose proportions already suit a bigger frame, then make the adjustments we make all the time: taller legs to raise the seat, and a firmer seat for real support.

Fit is personal because bodies are — the science of fitting furniture to the human body, anthropometry, shows just how much our proportions vary. That is why range matters: with many styles to choose from and a few regular adjustments on top, there’s almost always a piece that fits the way you actually sit — without designing one from the ground up.

The feet-and-back test. Sit all the way back and notice two things: where your feet land and where your back is supported. If your feet dangle or your knees ride high, the seat is too low or too deep; if your shoulders rise above the cushion, the back is too short. The right big-and-tall piece lets you sit back fully, plant your feet, and feel supported all the way up — which is exactly what the right style, set on the right legs with the right seat, is meant to do.

02

How to choose big and tall leather furniture

The best way to choose is to start from your body and the way you sit, then match it to a style and the adjustments that carry you the rest of the way — not to pick the largest model on the floor and hope.

Taller legs for a higher seat. A taller frame needs a higher seat so your hips sit level with or above your knees and your feet rest flat. Taller legs are one of the adjustments we make most often — raising the seat even an inch or two changes how you get up and how your back feels after an hour.

A firmer seat for real support. Larger frames usually want a seat that holds them up rather than letting them sink in. A firmer seat is a standard adjustment for us, and it keeps a bigger seat supportive for the long haul.

Seat depth and width from the right style. A deeper, wider seat lets a longer thigh rest fully and gives room to relax. Rather than re-engineer those dimensions, we steer you to the styles that already have them.

Back height for the shoulders. A taller back supports you above the cushion line instead of stopping at your mid-back. Choosing a style with a higher back gives your head and shoulders something to rest against.

For most people, the right style plus taller legs and a firmer seat is the practical path to a piece that fits — not a from-scratch redesign. Explore the full range of deep leather furniture to see how much the right style already does.

03

Why construction matters more at a larger scale

Bigger seats and more weight put more demand on everything you can’t see. A larger piece that is built like a standard one is exactly the piece that develops a sag in the middle, a flex in the frame, and a squeak within a couple of seasons. This is where big and tall leather furniture either holds up for decades or gives out early.

A frame built to carry more. We build on 100% kiln-dried, grade 1 hardwood a full inch thick, where many makers use 3/4-inch stock or particle board. Under a larger seat carrying more weight, that extra structure is what keeps the frame from flexing and loosening over time.

Heavy steel springs, set close together. More support directly under you across a wider, deeper seat — with independent, hand-tied seating so each seat holds its own and no one gets pulled into a “black hole” next to a heavier neighbor.

A soft-edge front spring. A flexible front edge cushions a deeper seat and keeps the cushion from sliding forward — the failure you see most on cheaply built oversized pieces — and it makes the cushion last longer too.

Triple-layer padding. Extra padding over the frame protects the leather where a larger frame puts the most pressure and prevents the hard frame lines that show on under-built furniture. See all nine construction features and the lifetime warranty on the frame and springs on our Leather Furniture Quality & Benefits page.

04

Cushions that keep their shape under more use

The larger the seat and the more it is used, the harder the cushion works — and the more it matters that the cushion is built to be maintained rather than thrown away. A big seat that flattens turns a supportive piece into a slumped one.

High-density cores that hold their loft. Our seat cushions are built to keep their shape where bargain foam softens within a season or two — essential over the larger surface of a big-and-tall seat, and the foundation for the firmer seat many larger frames want.

Refillable, rotatable, free for life. Seats and zippered back pillows are made to be refilled and rotated; come into any showroom and we give you the fiber fill free, for life, and show you how to top them up yourself.

Replaceable seats on reclining pieces. If you want big-and-tall comfort in a recliner or reclining sectional, our CURE cushion replacement system lets the seats be replaced rather than retiring the whole piece.

This is the long-game math behind a larger piece: a cushion you can refill, rotate, and replace is furniture that stays comfortable for decades.

Big and tall leather sectional in a living room — the Maxwell by Leather Creations

Scale done right doesn’t look bulky — it looks proportioned. A big-and-tall style set on the right legs fills a larger room comfortably and becomes the spot everyone gravitates to.

05

Big and tall in a sofa, a sectional, or a recliner

The right fit isn’t limited to one silhouette. A big-and-tall sofa anchors a den or living room; a big-and-tall sectional wraps a larger space and seats the whole family without anyone stuck on the edge; and a big-and-tall recliner gives a taller frame the leg and back support a standard recliner never quite manages. Pick the style you love and the same adjustments — taller legs, a firmer seat — carry across the whole arrangement, so every seat feels the same. We balance the scale against your room so the piece feels generous, not oversized. If you’re weighing a big-and-tall sofa against a sectional, start with our deep leather furniture collection, where the larger-scale styles live.

06

The right style, fit to you, made in the USA

Fitting a larger frame well only works when the people building the piece can offer the range and make the adjustments. We’ve handcrafted our furniture in America since 1994, which is exactly why we can carry the styles that suit bigger and taller bodies, tailor them with taller legs and a firmer seat, and stand behind every piece. American-made leather furniture carries a higher upfront cost than imported pieces and a longer, more dependable life that tends to make it the better value over time — especially on a larger piece, where construction has the most work to do.

What fit really buys you

Furniture that fits is furniture you actually relax in

You can change the leather, the leg style, or the configuration, but none of those decisions matters as much as whether the piece fits your body. Get the proportions right and you stop noticing the furniture — no perching forward, no rounded back, no climbing out of a seat that’s too low. You just sit down and stay.

Set that fit on a frame made to carry the scale, with cushions you can renew, and it lasts — a seat that fits you and keeps fitting for years.

Find your fit in person

Fit is something you have to feel — a measurement on paper tells you far less than five minutes of actually sitting back. The best way to find yours is to come in, try a range of styles, and let our team help you with the adjustments — taller legs, a firmer seat — that fit you and your room.

Bring your height, the way you like to sit, and your room dimensions, and we’ll help you find the piece that fits you.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

It’s furniture with a higher seat, a deeper and wider seat, and a taller back than a standard piece, on a frame and spring system made to carry more weight. A standard sofa sits about 19–20 inches high with a ~21-inch seat; big-and-tall raises and deepens those. Rather than design one from scratch, we fit you from a wide range of styles suited to larger and taller frames, plus a few adjustments we make regularly — most often taller legs and a firmer seat.

The two we make most often are taller legs, which raise the seat height for longer legs, and a firmer seat, which gives a larger frame support that holds rather than sinks. Beyond that, the biggest lever is style: choosing a model whose seat depth, width, and back height already suit a bigger body. Deeper changes are possible, but the practical path for most people is the right style plus those regular adjustments.

Yes. The difference isn’t just size — it’s structure. We build on a full 1-inch kiln-dried hardwood frame with heavy steel, hand-tied springs and a soft-edge front spring, so a larger seat carrying more weight stays supportive and quiet instead of flexing or sagging. The frame and springs carry a lifetime warranty.

Yes. The right styles work across sofas, sectionals, and reclining pieces, and the same adjustments — taller legs, a firmer seat — carry across an entire configuration so every seat feels the same. On reclining furniture, our CURE system lets the seat cushions be replaced down the road without retiring the whole piece.

An off-the-floor oversized sofa is simply bigger in a fixed way. We fit you from a range of styles suited to larger and taller frames, add the adjustments we make regularly — taller legs, a firmer seat — and build it on a frame and springs engineered for the added scale, with cushions you can refill and replace. Fit and construction, not just a bigger size.
