The construction that makes deep seating work
A deep seat is harder to build well than a standard one. More cushion has to be supported over a longer span, so the frame and spring system underneath matter more, not less. This is where a deep seat either holds up for decades or collapses into a sag in a couple of seasons.
A frame built to span the depth. We build on grade 1 hardwood a full inch thick — where many makers use 3/4″ or particle board. Over a deeper seat that extra structure is what keeps the front rail from flexing and the whole piece from loosening over time.
More springs, closer together. Heavy steel springs set near one another put support directly under you across the entire deeper seat — not just at the back where your weight would otherwise pool.
A soft-edge front spring. A flexible front edge cushions the longer seat and cups the cushion so it doesn’t slide forward — the failure you see most often on cheaply built deep sofas. Because the edge moves with the cushion, the cushion lasts longer too.
